🌸 SPRING HAS TRULY SPRUNG!

 

G’day legends! Spring has well and truly sprung, and that means snapper are quickly becoming the focus for anglers across both Port Phillip Bay and Western Port!

 

Water temperatures are slowly climbing, and interestingly, we’re seeing some early-season snapper activity around a month ahead of last year.

 

So, let’s get stuck into this week’s report! 👇

🐟 PORT PHILLIP BAY – SNAPPER

 

For those chasing an early-season red, things are definitely starting to look promising.

 

🔴 Altona

 

The northern end of the bay from Altona through to Black Rock has already seen the odd early-season snapper.

 

Altona Reef has produced fish to around 40cm, with some anglers getting amongst the early pinkies.

 

🔴 Williamstown

 

Williamstown has also produced some early snapper around the 40cm mark, with the odd fish pushing out towards 2kg.

 

🔴 Black Rock

 

Black Rock is once again producing consistent numbers, with fish around 40–50cm being reported.

 

Definitely an area worth keeping an eye on as spring continues to warm the water.

 

🔴 Clifton Springs

 

The channel around Clifton Springs has seen the odd snapper starting to show, particularly during the afternoons.

 

🔴 Corio Bay

 

Corio Bay has been a place to be for pinkies and snapper, with some good reports coming through.

 

There has even been a surprise land-based session from North Shore, proving you don't always need a boat to get amongst the action!

 

🔴 Portarlington

 

Portarlington has already produced some early-season reds, both boat and land-based.

 

This area is certainly looking like one to watch closely as the season progresses!

 

🔴 St Leonards

 

Land-based anglers have been getting amongst the pinkies around St Leonards, particularly at night.

🐟 WESTERN PORT – SNAPPER

 

Western Port has also started showing some serious signs of what's to come.

 

The top end of the northern section, around Eagle Rock through to Boultons Channel, has produced early-season snapper, particularly during the afternoons.

 

🔴 East Arm & The Corals

 

Good snapper have been reported around East Arm and The Corals, including a cracker fish over 9kg already!

 

That’s a serious early-season fish and a sign that the bigger reds are starting to move.

 

🔴 Hastings

 

Hastings has also seen the odd snapper showing up around the mud not far from the main channel.

 

The season is definitely starting to wake up!

🦑 SQUID / CALAMARI REPORT

 

Squid fishing across Port Phillip Bay has been very productive, with plenty of areas firing.

 

🦑 Point Cook

 

Good squid have been coming from around The Big Stick, near the marine park.

 

🦑 Werribee

 

Good numbers are being caught around the Wyndham Harbour area.

 

🦑 Point Wilson

 

Excellent squid fishing has been reported from Point Wilson.

 

🦑 Avalon

 

Avalon continues to be very consistent, with good numbers being reported.

 

🦑 Clifton Springs

 

The weed beds near the ramp have been productive, particularly during the afternoons.

 

🦑 St Leonards

 

Land-based anglers are getting good squid off the St Leonards Pier, while boat anglers have been finding them around the boat sheds.

 

🦑 Queenscliff

 

Queenscliff continues to live up to its reputation as squid capital, with good squid being found around the Cottage by the Sea area.

 

🦑 Sorrento & Portsea

 

Both Sorrento and Portsea are producing good squid around the moored boats.

 

The piers are also proven squid locations, with afternoons producing some good results.

 

🦑 Mornington

 

Mornington Pier has been producing calamari around the boats, while boat anglers have also been finding squid on the weed beds near the pier.

Hooked With Tolga sent in an absolute cracker of a report — and a photo for the Born2Fish Brag Wall!

 

He landed what looks to be a 5kg+ snapper from the Portarlington wall, with the fish falling to half a pilchard.

🎣 FRESHWATER REPORT

 

It’s not all about the saltwater legends!

 

🐟 Bostock Reservoir – Ballan

 

Redfin are starting to be caught on lures, making Bostock worth a look for those chasing a freshwater session.

 

🐟 Lake Wendouree

 

Trout continue to be the main target, with afternoons producing the better results.

 

🐟 Lake Bullen Merri

 

Good trout and Chinook salmon are being caught on both bait and lures.

 

🐟 Hopkins River – Warrnambool

 

The Hopkins is producing trout above Hopkins Falls, with both lure and fly anglers getting amongst them.

🦑 CREW REPORT – INDENTED HEAD & PRINCE GEORGE BANKS

 

The Born2Fish crew hit the water and found some solid calamari around Indented Head and Prince George Banks, with the B2F Custom Jigs doing the damage once again.

 

We concentrated our efforts in 2–4 metres of water, targeting the heavier patches of weed, which produced the best results.

 

🌊 TIDE WAS THE KEY

 

The run-out tide was clearly the productive stage, with the squid becoming active and willing to chase the jigs.

 

Once the tide turned and the incoming tide started, the bite shut down noticeably.

 

🎯 Our tip: Find the heavy weed, fish the run-out tide and keep moving until you locate active squid.

What Squid Jig Should You Use & When?

Walking into a tackle shop and looking at a wall full of squid jigs can be pretty overwhelming.

Pink, orange, green, brown, white, red, purple, UV, glow, natural… so which one should you actually tie on?

The truth is there isn't one magic colour that catches squid every day.

The key is matching your jig to the amount of light, water clarity, depth and the mood of the squid.

Here’s our Born2Fish guide to help you make the right choice before your next calamari session. 🎣🦑

🌅 FIRST LIGHT – SUNRISE

GO NATURAL OR DARK CONTRAST

At first light, there isn't much sunlight penetrating the water, so we like to start with something that gives the squid a good silhouette.

Our picks:

  • 🤎 Brown / natural

  • 🟤 Olive

  • ❤️ Red

  • 🖤 Dark colours

  • 🟡 Gold foil

  • 🌸 Pink

If the water is clean and the squid are feeding confidently, a natural-looking jig can be deadly.

If the water has a bit of colour or the light is very low, switch towards a darker or higher-contrast pattern.

B2F TIP:
Don't be afraid to start darker at first light. As the sun comes up, change your colour with the conditions.

☀️ MID-MORNING – BRIGHT SUN

GO NATURAL, SILVER & FLASH

Once the sun is up and visibility improves, this is when natural baitfish-style colours really come into their own.

Our picks:

  • 🐟 Pilchard / baitfish patterns

  • 🦐 Natural prawn

  • 🤎 Brown

  • 🟢 Olive / green

  • ⚪ White

  • 🩶 Silver

  • 🌸 Soft pink

In clear water, squid can get a really good look at your jig, so a more natural presentation can make a big difference.

This is also the time we love experimenting with our more natural B2F Custom Jigs.

☁️ OVERCAST DAYS

PINK • ORANGE • UV • CONTRAST

Cloud cover reduces the amount of direct light entering the water, so this is where we start moving away from extremely subtle colours.

Our picks:

  • 💗 Pink

  • 🧡 Orange

  • 🟣 Purple

  • 💚 Green

  • ✨ UV

  • ⚪ White

UV finishes can be particularly useful when there is still plenty of ambient daylight but the conditions are dull or overcast.

If you're fishing a weed bed and the water has a slight green tinge, a brighter colour can also help the squid locate the jig.

🌤️ AFTERNOON

WATCH THE WATER – DON'T JUST WATCH THE CLOCK

As the afternoon progresses, the best colour can change with the weather.

If it's still bright and the water is clear:

Natural • Silver • Brown • Olive

If clouds roll in or the water becomes dirty:

Pink • Orange • Green • UV

This is where carrying a few different colours pays off.

🌅 LAST LIGHT – SUNSET

THIS IS WHEN WE START BRINGING OUT THE BIG GUNS

As the sun disappears, visibility drops quickly.

This is one of our favourite times to experiment with:

❤️ Red

🟣 Purple

💗 Pink

🧡 Orange

🟢 Glow / UV

🖤 Dark contrast

A glow belly or glow body can become extremely useful as the available light disappears.

B2F TIP:
Don't wait until it's completely dark before changing your jig. Start changing as the light begins to fade.

🌙 NIGHT FISHING

GLOW • DARK CONTRAST • UV

Fishing squid after dark is a completely different game.

Around piers, lights and shallow weed, we want a jig the squid can easily locate.

Our night rotation:

🟢 Glow

⚪ White / glow

🖤 Black / dark silhouette

💗 Pink / glow

🧡 Orange / glow

❤️ Red / dark contrast

Glow is particularly useful when visibility is poor, while a dark back can create a strong silhouette against available light.

If you don't want to carry 20 different colours, keep it simple.

Cloud, green water & changing conditions

Dawn, dusk, night & dirty water

❤️ Red
🟣 Dark purple
🟢 Glow
⚪ Glow/white

That's three basic colour groups that will cover a huge range of squid fishing conditions.

🎣 BUT HERE'S THE BIG B2F TIP…

DON'T BLAME THE COLOUR STRAIGHT AWAY.

If you're seeing squid following the jig but they're not committing, don't immediately assume you've got the wrong colour.

Try changing:

1. Sink time

2. Retrieve speed

3. Jig size

4. Depth you're fishing

5. THEN colour

A squid jig is only effective if it's actually spending enough time in the strike zone.

In Port Phillip Bay, sizes around 2.5–3.5 can cover a lot of situations, with 3.0 being a great all-round starting point. Smaller jigs suit shallow, calm conditions while larger jigs become useful when depth, wind or current increases.

And remember…

There is no "best" squid jig colour.

The best colour is the one that gives the squid something they want to eat in the conditions you're fishing right now.

So don't be afraid to change colours.
